A Capital Time $16.12 A Capital Time The woman sat opposite and said, ‘You are still in the life as Graecus the Centurion. You have defeated Boudicca, you are with your century and with your beloved son, Germanicus.Take me to the next important scene in that life. Where do you need to go now?’In a darkened room, the hypnotised subject undergoing regression takes Graecus back to the place he has avoided for so long and least wishes to be – Rome. In this book, the Auxiliary Centurion and his men visit the capital of the ancient world to take part in General Suetonius’s ovation. The reader goes with them walking down the teeming streets of the plebeian districts and through the gleaming marble monuments to Nero’s power. While the auxiliaries marvel at the dazzling sights of the imperial city, they also find danger in its dark alleys. The soldiers learn that the exotic scents adorning the rich often mask a strong whiff of decaying fish but, in their dealings with Rome’s rulers, they discover that seafood is not the only rotten thing in the city. As Graecus and his century prepare for the ovation, meetings with some of Rome’s most alluring women ensure that life will never be the same again.Praise for J A Gordon’s earlier books in the Chronicles series:’Reading The Weight of Time and Moments in Time is like uncovering a Roman mosaic – all the pieces fit together to provide a convincing picture of a bygone age and so skilfully that the story lingers in the mind long after the last page is turned”Moments in Time and The Weight of Time are extremely enjoyable and very well written; the characters are well-rounded and the great detail brings them to life. This enthralling historical adventure fairly sails along’.For news of the next book in the series Glimpses of Eternity please visit: www.chroniclesofeternity.co.uk |

Churches in Emilia-Romagna: Modena Cathedral $10.55 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Modena Cathedral, Tempio Malatestiano, Basilica of Sant’apollinare Nuovo, Basilica of Sant’apollinare in Classe, Nonantola Abbey, Arian Baptistry, Baptistry of Neon, Reggio Emilia Cathedral, Basilica Della Ghiara, Piacenza Cathedral, Archbishop’s Chapel, Ravenna, San Giovanni Evangelista, Ravenna, Pieve Di San Giorgio. Excerpt: The Archbishop’s Chapel (or Archiepiscopal Chapel ) is a chapel on the first floor of the bishops’ palace in Ravenna , Italy , the smallest of the famous mosaic sites of the city. It is a private oratory of Trinitarian bishops dating from the turn of the 6th century. Although commonly attributed to St. Peter Chrysologus , Archbishop of Ravenna from 433450, the chapel was actually built by Peter II shortly after he became archbishop in 495. The mosaics date from the original construction, or soon after. The tiny cruciform chapel is currently dedicated to Saint Andrew , although the original dedication was to the Saviour , as evidenced by a lunette over the vestibule door representing Christ treading on the beasts , dressed as a general or victorious Emperor. The lower parts of the walls are lined with marble slabs, while the rest of the interior used to be covered with rich, tapestry-like mosaics , as the vault still is. Some parts of these survive, while others were substituted with tempera paintings by Luca Longhi in the 16th century.According to the ICOMOS evaluation of this World Heritage Site , “the significance of this property is the fact that it is the only Early Christian private oratory that has survived to the present day. Its iconography is also important by virtue of its strongly anti-Arian symbolism”. References (URLs online) Coordinates : 44°2455.8N 12°1151.9E / 44.4155°N 12.19775°E / 44.4155; 12.19775A |

His Angel $16.77 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER III. ” WOULD THAT BE WRONG, DADDIE DEAR 1″ THE amber evening sunlight danced upon the hundred panes of the handsome conservatory of a majestic, brown stone mansion on Fifth Avenue, New York City. It darted and flashed in a myriad sparkling atoms between the graceful fanlike branches of a small forest of palms, it gleamed yellow upon the darkly resplendent foliage of the camellia trees, and the delicately pale green lacework of the maidenhair ferns turned a mellow gold beneath its kiss. Its fairy touch bronzed the stately chrysanthemums with a richer and a deeper brown, it bathed evergreen and aloe and cactus in a flood of rippling sheen, and ran in dozens of warm, ruddy flecks and streaks upon the marble mosaic floor. In one corner, where the drawn blinds and the overhanging foliage of the climbing stepha- notis and of the stately fan palms afforded a welcome shade, Angel Kershaw swung herself to and fro in a high, round-backed, old- fashioned rocking-chair. On her right, Diana, the huntress, drew an arrow from a marble quiver; on her left, Juno scowled in white stony majesty at a mythical, invisible Paris. Miss Kershaw was engaged in the unprofitable occupation of sighing. To sigh implies fear of failure or delay in the realization of a wish. It implies that some little house of cards, fancifully and daintily constructed, is in danger of being rudely blown down. It implies that some bright picture of hope has been called from dreamland, and found but a pleasurable dream. Now it wouldseem strange, to start with, that a young lady so favoured by kindly nature and by a kindlier fortune, as Angelica Kershaw doubtlessly was above her sisters, should haveaught to sigh for at all. She was young, good looking, the admired of all men, the envied of all women. Di… |

Marble $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Marble is a non foliated metamorphic rock composed mostly of calcite, a crystalline form of calcium carbonate. It is formed from carbonate rocks, often limestone. It is extensively used for sculpture and as a building material. The word “marble” derives from the Greek “” (mármaron), from “” (mármaros), “crystalline rock”, “shining stone”, perhaps from the verb “” (marmaír), “to flash, sparkle, gleam”. This stem is also the basis for the English word marmoreal, meaning “marble-like.” Whilst the English term resembles the French marbre, most other european languages (eg Spanish marmol, Italian marmo, Portugese marmore, German and Swedish marmor, Polish marmur, Czech mramor and Russian á ) follow the original Greek. Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from regional or, rarely, contact metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks (either limestone or dolomite rock) or metamorphism of older marble. This metamorphic process causes a complete recrystallization of the original rock into an interlocking mosaic of calcite, aragonite and/or dolomite crystals. The temperatures and pressures necessary to form marble usually destroy any fossils and sedimentary textures present in the original rock. Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of very pure limestones. The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert which were originally present as grains or layers in the limestone. Green coloration is often due to serpentine resulting from originally high magnesium limestone or dolostone with silica impurities. These various impurities have been mobilized and recrystallized by the intense pressure and heat of the metamorphism. Historically … |
