Rapid economic and social change in urban India, and a belief that education is the key to upward mobility, has led to a growing emphasis on competition and high stakes testing in school. However, in spite of concerns over stress as well as gender and caste discrimination, little has been done to explore the Indian school environment and its’ psychological or academic consequences for adolescent girls. This research begins to fill that gap and was guided by the following two main questions: To what extent do perceptions of belonging in school and relationships with teachers and peers explain the psychological and academic well being of Indian adolescent girls over and above demographic and school climate risk factors? How are Indian adolescent girls experiencing and making sense of belonging in school? In the quantitative component (N=141), hierarchical regression analyses revealed that belonging in school explained both self esteem and depression over and above caste membership and school related stress. Student/student relationships were associated with depression and student/teacher relationships were associated with self esteem over and above these demographic and school risk factors. Findings also revealed that self esteem mediated the relationship between belonging and academic performance. The qualitative component (N=16) demonstrated that girls experience belonging in school when their teachers encourage them to participate in classroom and school activities and when their teachers offer academic assistance and clarification.
